GRAHAM RUSSELL & ORIGINAL CAST - THE HEART OF THE ROSE: A ROCK OPERA

While this is not a bootleg recording, it is out of print and nearly impossible to find. If you're lucky enough to find a copy for sale, the seller will have set the price so high that it is robbery. This beautiful opera showcases Graham's extraordinary talent as a composer and should be archived. The music is epic and sweeping, as is the story....the love story of Robin Hood & Marian. I remember reading way back in the early 80s that Graham had been working on a rock opera called Sherwood. This is the result of that work, decades down the line, a vision realized.

RUSSELL HITCHCOCK - TAKE TIME (DEMO)

NOTE: This is not the officially released version of Russell's second solo album. If you do not own a copy of the official release, you are encouraged to support the artist and purchase the CD.

The story is that an ex-girlfriend of Russell's made this demo tape available for auction on ebay. Of course, from there it inevitably found its way into the hands of fans and collectors. When I received a copy and listened to it, it was like a gift. I loved the album, recorded in 1995 with Russell's voice at it's pinnacle, a great band and some great songs, and I wondered why it hadn't seen official release. To Russell's credit, he combatted the leak of this demo with an official, remastered and remixed release of the album. As I said above, if you don't have that official release, you should definitely buy it and support Russell's music. If you're a big enough fan that you're here for rare music, you'll love the album. These demos are posted here for their historical value and to give anyone who hasn't heard it the chance to listen to the album as it was originally produced back in `95. Enjoy.

LIVE AT VINA DEL MAR (1987) (Audio)

This audio version of the 1987 Vina del Mar show is compiled from two sources. The main set is ripped from the DVD posted here last year while the three bonus tracks are audio recordings of some videos found on youtube. To my understanding, the portion of the show featured on DVD was broadcast on Chilean television. I cannot verify the source of the three videos posted on youtube which comprise the bonus tracks. I also do not know if this represents the entire setlist played that night. It is, however, the most complete version of this hard to find show available. This is the only bootleg I know of from the Hearts In Motion tour and several songs from that album, the first of Air Supply's to go largely unnoticed in America, are featured in the set.

Here's the third in a trilogy of shows from Atlantic City in my home-state of New Jersey. This February 21, 2009 performance is another audience recording. The sound quality is good, though to my ear not quite as good as the other two Atlantic City shows I've posted. The performance is outstanding, as usual. highlights of the show for me are the great Without you, Faith In Love, the always-welcome Chances and, of course,The Power Of Love.

THE EARTH IS...LIVE (1991)

This is the audio rip from the 1991 DVD of the same title that was released through the fan club. I was hoping to upload the video also but that disc seems to have disappeared. Shame. Regardless, this is a great set from `91, a time when Air Supply was a pretty serious little rock band. The new songs have an edge and maturity to them and the classic hits are played with a new passion. I haven't edited out the spoken portions of the program because I found Graham and Russell's anecdotes to be entertaining and actually flowed well with the show. I did split those portions into seperate tracks, though. The sound is great, the band sounds heavy and the vocals are perfection. One of the highlights of this set is the rehearsal take of Dancing With The Mountain. It's interesting to hear the band work through a live arrangement of a song, bouncing ideas off each other, with Graham clearly the driving force but open minded to everyone.

BE A PEPPER (1982)

That's right...Be A Pepper. For those of you too young to recall that great and distant time known as the 80s, Dr. Pepper used to run commercials featuring the pop stars of the day performing their rendition of the soft drink's theme song. Air Supply did a spot for the soda company in the summer of 1982 and I remember the first time I heard it on the radio, laughing a little and also noticing how much the arrangement sounded like an Air Supply song. While not a live recording, this is one that should be archived.

LIVE IN HAWAII, 1982 (VIDEO)

Last year when I uploaded the audio rip of this show, I promised the video. Better late than never, isn't that what they say. Although this was an officially released concert video, it is long out of print and stands as the band's only official live document of their seminal era.
Filmed live in Hawaii for HBO in 1982, this excellent concert brought the amazingly popular band into the living rooms of millions of fans . I remember getting the HBO guide and seeing that an Air Supply concert was going to be aired and being so excited. My girlfriend and several friends from school gathered at my house the night it premiered and we felt like we were there.

LABOR DAY, 1983

It's been quite some time since I've updated the blog. Life gets busy and sometimes we aren't able to take the time for our hobbies. I'm glad to find myself with some spare time and happy to be updating the archive with a rare treat courtesy of my good friend MJ. This show from Labor Day, 1983 is one I've never seen circulated among the bootleg community. MJ found her original cassette recording of the broadcast in a box of old tapes and she was generous enough to do a digital transfer and share the show with us. There are a few seconds of garbled sound where the original tape was damaged but for a 30 year old cassette recording, the sound quality is nice and the performance is enjoyable. It's always nice when we get to hear a show that hasn't made the rounds before. Thanks,MJ.

Live From Nowhere (1995)

This is a very good audience recording from the News From Nowhere tour. The show opens with acoustic renditions of Lost In Love and Here I Am and offers excellent versions of The Vanishing Race, Someone and Don't Be Afraid. Unchained Melody is simply incredible. For quite some time after I got this show, I didn't listen to it. I've always preferred the sound when they toured with a fuller band and this was the first tour as a stripped down five man unit without lead guitar. I have to admit, when I finally got around to giving it a fair listen, I really came to love this performance.

Live In Charlotte (1985)

Considering this is a 25-year-old audience recording, this 1985 show from Charlotte, North Carolina offers surprisingly good sound. As with the entire tour, the setlist is great and the band is in excellent form. There's a moment of "drop-out" during Don't Be Afraid (probably the taper switching sides on his tape as this was originally recorded on a 90 minute cassette) but overall it's a really nice bootleg. Highlights are When The Time Is Right, a killer version of Just As I Am, the great Don Cromwell composition I Can't Stay Away and a hilarious comment from Russell that he'd "never seen so many wet women before." It was a rainy day and an outdoor show.

Live In Tokyo (2002)

The sound quality of this recording from a 2002 Tokyo performance is exceptional, considering it is from an audience tape. There is another version of this show floating around but the sound on that recording is quite muffled. This is either from another source recording or a remastered version of the same source. This show, while recorded at a time when Russell was having voice troubles, finds him in pretty good form, though I did notice the heavy use of a reverb effect on his vocals to give them some lift. Highlights are an excellent version of Chances opening the show, a poetry reading from Graham and the tracks from Yours Truly, which is my least favorite Air Supply album, but the tracks come across nicely in concert.

Live In Florida (1989)

In 1989, Air Supply was touring without a current album to promote. This show from Florida features a killer setlist, though I was a little surprised to see that ther most recent album, 1987's Hearts In Motion, was completely ignored. On the other hand, there are several tracks that would appear two years later on The Earth Is. In fact, in the bones of this setlist you can find the structure of the standard The Earth Is tour shows coming into place. The sound on this one is somewhat heavy on the treble-end but it is still a superior remaster of the original tape, which was extremely muffled and muddy to the point of being unlistenable. Highlights of this show are Two Less Lonely People In The World in it's original album arrangement, Great Pioneer and the underrated and underplayed classic My Best Friend from the Lost In Love album.

Live In Chester (2010)

I've noticed with the release of Mumbo Jumbo that Air Supply shows are being more actively recorded. I can't recall another tour where concert recordings were available so soon after the performance. In the realm of bootlegged artists, Air Supply seems to have been under-recorded in comparison to a lot of other acts. I think their new status as somewhat the elder statesmen of romantic pop rock, tapers are taking their live show a little more seriously. I hope this bodes well for the availability of future recordings. This show, recorded from the audience in Chester, PA, suffers from a "distance" in the sound quality but it will be of interest to fans and the sound isn't too bad overall...just turn up the volume. This one is on my list of shows to remaster, in hopes of drawing the sound out some, but in the meantime here's the original recording.
